It is hard to deny that Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. From greeting cards galore, to bountiful flower bouquets, to everyone desperately seeking out dinner reservations for February 14. The “day of love” is a change of pace where we are able to acknowledge our affinity and admiration for others. However, there can be a lot of effort and time that goes into planning the perfect activity… especially in the “February slump.”

Although Michigan is (easily) the best state, the Valentine’s season can be a bit dismal. Cabin fever has sunk-in throughout the winter months and all we want is to fireplace-dwell, tea sip and cookie bake. In attempts to change the trajectory of all negative, winter opinions, here are some alternative options for the perfect Valentine’s Day…outdoors. Yes, you heard me. Coats, boots, skates and all!

Whether you are spending February 14 with your significant other, friends, family or your K-9 compadre, here are the five best ways to get outdoors this Valentines Day!

Do something “Tree-mendous”

Hiking, snowshoeing and skiing-galore! Hitting the trails with loved ones is one of the greatest ways to explore, converse and stay fit. Instead of hiding from the chilly, winter air; embrace it! From the Ledges of Grand Ledge, to Lake Lansing Park North in Haslett, there are several options around the Lansing area to breathe in fresh air! Lake Lansing Park North offers nordic skiing, groomed trails for hiking and a place to strap on snowshoes. Seeking a scenic run or walk with your 4-legged Valentine? Grand Ledge’s Fitzgerald Park is home to 300 million-year-old rock formations and a quick escape from the hustle and bustle.

Love you a latte

Interested in a more urban setting? The Lansing River Trail encompasses over 20 miles of paved trail pass through numerous parks and natural areas. The trail is perfect for runners, walkers and river-spectators. Looking to put a pep in your step? Grab a cup of coffee with your from one of the exceptional Lansing coffee shops before hitting the trails. Caffeine-induced walks always make for stimulating conversations and achieving daily “step” goals.

Dogs+Skiing = Skiijoring

If you’re spending Valentine’s Day with your tride-and-true K-9 love, shake up your daily walking routine with skiijoring! Never heard of Skiijoring? That’s okay, you’re not alone. Skiijoring is “part skiing, part sledding, part dog-walking, part trail running, and 100% fun.” This epic combination is a great activity for medium-to-large dogs that are acquainted with wintery temps and are gifted at tugging you along on your everyday walks. Skiijoring requires a harness for your dog, a belt or harness for you, and an 8- to 12-foot shock-corded tug line. Access to skiijoring trailsand an unforgettable adventure is just a couple hours away!

“Snow” Problems This Valentine’s Day

Hitting the slopes or sleds is a timeless Michigan favorite. Locally, sledding is a great option of the whole family to enjoy! There are several sledding hills around the Lansing area. Interested in more of a thrill with your loved ones? Mount Brighton and Cannonsburg are about an hour away from the capital city. Pack up the skis, snowboards and Valentine’s Day candy for a day wintery day trip!

Have An “Ice” Date

Whether you are a triple-axel-natural or find accomplishment in staying upright on skates, visiting an ice rink is a highly recommended Valentines Day activity. There are several options in the Greater Lansing area for skating, such as Munn Ice Arena and Suburban Ice. Feeling ambitious? Take a road trip to Grand Rapids to skate outside at Rosa Parks Circle. Skating is amusing for the whole family, a group of pals, or a prime opportunity to hold hands with that special someone.
