Playmakers SAVE XC Campaign

I12_SaveXC_Logon 2011 Lansing Eastern, Lansing Sexton, and Waverly High Schools lost funding for their Cross Country Programs. Although this produced significant challenges to those programs, area running communities stepped up huge in support of Cross Country and those affected programs!

Playmakers, again in 2012, will be "running" a "Save XC" campaign to help support those programs through these challenging seasons. The Save XC shirts will be on sale at Playmakers, online, by the respective coaches of the teams. The costs of the neon yellow or bright pink shirts is $20 with 100% of the proceeds divided among the programs.

It is our hope that the programs will again be fully funded by the schools, but until that happens, lets show the communities that runners care and look after their sport! Run for all, all for run!

Shirts will be in store and online starting Friday, August 10. Contact Andy if you have any questions or would like to purchase a quantity of shirts: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

A note from the Eastern High School Cross Country Coaches

As many of you know, district funding for the Lansing Eastern Boy's and Girl's Cross Country programs was cut last year, forcing us to become self funding.  Unfortunately that scenario has not changed for this year.  We are receiving great support from Playmakers and from Coach Block's Michigan Running Foundation again this year, but still have to raise funds ourselves to pay entry fees, coaching salaries, etc.  This year with the 7th and 8th graders moving to the high school building we are also working to support boy's and girl's middle school cross country teams as well, since those programs also were cut.  We can't do it alone, and are once again asking for your help.  Below are some of the ways that you can support our efforts:

1. We are holding our annual 10-mile pledge run on Monday, August 27th, at 9:00 a.m.  There are several ways that you can support this effort:

a. Make a pledge to support the teams in general
b. Make a pledge in my name (can be a pledge per mile run, or just a given amount)
c. Make a pledge for one of the runners on our team that you know
d. Come out and run with us to show your support (feel free to collect your own pledges to aid our cause)
e. Volunteer to man one of the aid stations set up at Potter Park and the Lansing City Market
f. Come out and cheer the runners on

Donation checks and cash can be collected and turned in at Potter Park the morning of the pledge run, or checks can be mailed to me.  Checks should be made out to "Eastern PTSA Boosters", with "Cross Country" written in the memo section.  If you want to mail donations to me, please mail them to "Kim Christian, 1209 Parkdale St., Lansing, MI., 48910

2. Purchase a "Save Cross Country" t-shirt from Playmakers for $20.00.  For every t-shirt sold Lansing Eastern and Lansing Waverly each receive $10.00 to support their self funding efforts.  T-shirts can be purchased at the Playmakers store in Okemos, or can be ordered on line on the Playmakers website.

Thank you so much for your past support.  We look forward to seeing several of you on August 27th.

Area track and field teams impress at MSU/Playmakers indoor meets

shot put champion Victoria Milton of Waverly

Okemos won the larger high school boys title at the MSU/Playmakers True Team Indoor Track Invitational.

Read the story from the Lansing State Journal.
The Chiefs will continue to earn major points throughout the season from a talented group of seniors that include Ian Horne and Taylor Moton in the shot put, Ayrton Fineout in the pole vault and Denny Hodge in the long jump.
But fourth-place Grand Ledge showed it will be a force again because it did well in the sprints. Darryn Gorman won the 60-meter dash and was also part of the winning 800 (4x200) relay along with high jump champion Harris Edwards plus Connor Anderson and Luke Vasillion.
Defending Division 2 state champion East Lansing showed they still have some talent by winning the 1600 (4x400) relay. The relay was made up of Elijah Hamilton-Wray, Nicolas Pridnia, Lawrence Davis and Ronnie Russell.
See complete results and links to photos of both larger and smaller school meets.
In the larger school girls meet, Grand Ledge edged Okemos for the team title.

Ayda Alavi won the 400 and Ashlynn Schiro the 60-meter hurdles for runner-up Okemos.
Fifth-place East Lansing won the 800 (4x200) relay with Essence Whitaker, Mikayla Pryor, Elizabeth Jones and Mercedes Lee.
Victoria Milton won the shot put and Chante Roberts won the 800 for eighth place Waverly, which also won the 1600 (4x400) relay. (Photo of Milton taken by Kevin W. Fowler for the Lansing State Journal.)

Josie Yesmunt won the 60-meter dash, Audrey Koenigsknecht the 400 and Kayla Hanses the 3200 for the Panthers -- which also finished first in the 800 (4x200), 1600 (4x400) and 3200 relays.

Michaila Lawcock won the pole vault for fifth-place Corunna, Rachelle Sandbrook won the high jump for sixth-place Ovid-Elsie, and Jasmine Holloway won the 800 for 12th-place Stockbridge.

Mason boys, Lansing Catholic boys, DeWitt girls among title contenders

Ionia boys also in the mix at MIS in state

by Dick Hoekstra

Lansing State Journal

A goal from 15 months ago that was almost achieved early a year ago looms for the Mason boys cross country team — a Division 2 state title.

Despite qualifying for the state meet as a team for the first time since 1983 and not having a single senior competing, the Bulldogs managed to finish runner-up in 2010 at Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn.

On Saturday, Mason will try to live up to the No. 1 ranking it has held all season long.

“The guys have put in the work for a year and a half to give themselves a chance,” Mason boys coach Charles Miller said. “I think we’re ready. Everyone’s healthy, feeling good and looking forward to it.

“It’s been a great year regardless of what happens, but we would like to finish it off with a win. We know last year that the best team in the state (Ionia) did not win it. So I have told the guys to concentrate on keeping themselves together the whole week and during the race itself.”

Ionia , the No. 1 team throughout 2010 before illnesses led to a fifth-place finish at the state meet, is No. 3 this fall and poised to reclaim the title it earned in 2009 if Mason falters.

No. 6 Haslett, looking to improve on a 10th-place finish a year ago, defeated Mason at the Bath Invitational in early September when the Bulldogs’ Mason VanDyke missed the meet due to injury.

The only other team to finish ahead of Mason this fall was Division 3 Grandville Calvin Christian at Michigan State’s Spartan Invitational in mid-September.

Four Calvin Christian athletes ran faster than 16 minutes that day. The key for Lansing Catholic’s chances of avoiding a second straight state runner-up finish and stopping the Squires from earning the title on Saturday is Calvin Christian’s fifth runner.

“Their fifth man finally broke 17 minutes at regionals with a 16:58 so that’s a possibility,” Lansing Catholic coach Tim Simpson said. “They could also have one or two guys slip back a little.

“We’re right there with our fastest times, but we have to run those times again Saturday. We have to try to get all five of our guys to run well.”

The Cougar boys are making their eighth straight state finals appearance as a team, as are the honorable mention Grand Ledge girls in Division 1.

The fifth-ranked Potterville boys are seeking their eighth straight top-10 finish. They have finished 3-7-10-1-1-4-4 the past seven years in Division 4.

The honorable mention East Lansing girls are looking to extend a similar streak of top-7 finishes in Division 2. The Trojans have posted finishes of 4-3-5-7-5-4 the past six years.

The mid-Michigan area girls team with the best chance of bringing home a state title is DeWitt, which moved up to No. 1 after winning the Greater Lansing Cross Country Championships in mid-October, but has been listed third in the weeks since then.

“Call me crazy, but I think we have as good a chance as anyone else,” DeWitt girls coach Ron Womboldt said. “We don’t have the girls up front that Cedar Springs and (Grand Rapids) Forest Hills Northern do, but whoever runs best on Saturday will win.

“I have seen some extraordinary things happen in athletics. People beat the odds all the time. We have a chance if we run well.”

For the first time since 1983, both Mason teams qualified for the state meet. Other schools to have both team advance to the state finals are Stockbridge in Division 3, Potterville in Division 4 and Okemos in Division 1.

The Okemos girls qualified even though the Chieftains finished fourth in their regional, because the

MHSAA allows a fourth team to compete in the state meet if four runners finish in the top 20 at regionals — and Okemos did.
