Starting a 5K run/walk is not easy. The following is some information that might make you decide to try a chicken dinner or a bake sale instead. There were only about 40 mid-Michigan road races a dozen years ago, and now there are more than 100. Increased competition, especially in the warmer months, is leading to smaller numbers -- and therefore less money raised for charities -- for new and repeat events. But this information should be helpful not only for those who still decide to start a new road race but also for someone looking to improve a race or for someone who has been selected as a new race director for an established event. Symptoms: (pain)
- Along the (medial inner) aspect of the kneecap or just below the kneecap
- When using stairs or going up and down hills
- Worse after prolonged sitting with the knees bent
- More of a dull ache
- Cracking or grating in the knee
- Eventually, knee may want to "catch" and may feel like it wants to give out

Symptoms:
- Pain along the lateral (outside) of the hip
- Pain when ascending stairs and or getting up from a seated position
- Pain associated with standing for long periods or for sitting for extended periods
- May have trouble sleeping
- May have limited range of motion of the hip
