MSU's MacLeod 50th, Wisconsin's Darling 144th at NCAA nationals

NCAA Great Lakes Regional champion Emily MacLeod finished 50th in a 6K (3.72-mile) time of 20:56 for the 26th-place Michigan State women's cross country team in the NCAA Division I Nationals at Terre Haute, Ind. The MSU men finished 31st and Ovid-Elsie graduate Maverick Darling took 144th place with a 10K (6.2-mile) time of 31:21 as the fifth runner for seventh-place Wisconsin. Led by Patrick Grosskopf of Corunna's fifth-place finish, the Michigan State men's cross country team took second place at the NCAA regional meet in Bloomington, Ind., and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division I national meet. Junior Emily MacLeod became the fourth MSU woman (and second straight since Nicole Bush won last year) to take first in the regional meet as the Spartan women finished fifth and were granted an at-large berth into the nationals. In the women's 6K, MacLeod (20:42), Carlie Green (12th in 21:26) and Rebekah Smeltzer (24th in 21:42) were all named to the all-region team. In the men's 10K, Grosskopf (31:12), Spencer Beatty (19th in 31:31) and Josh McAlary (20th in 31:34) made the all-region team along with Ovid-Elsie graduate Maverick Darling (15th in 31:27) from regional champion Wisconsin.

LCC women's cross country team 8th, men 10th at NJCAA nationals

The seventh-ranked Lansing Community College women finsihed eighth and the fifth-ranked men took 10th of 35 teams on Saturday at the National Junior College Athletic Association national meet in Peoria, Ill.

 

Ellory Green of Brighton (19:18) finished 25th, Brooke Simon of Fowler (19:37), Nikki May of Portland (19:54) 51st, Kaylin Belair of Mason (20:10) 67th, and Cynthia Ingle of Mason (20:27) 78th for the Stars' women.

 

Addis Habtewold of St. Clair (26:00) came in 20th, Jesus Perez-Flores (27:05) 46th, Devin Duflo of Carson City (27:29) 67th, Gareth Gose of Leslie (27:56) 94th, Ryan Rebain of Remus (27:57) 96th, and Eric Spitz of Holt (28:12) 108th for the LCC men.

LCC's Chuck Block, who is assisted by Jim Robinson, was named men's regional coach of the year for a 10th straight year (or every year he has been the Stars' head coach) and for the eighth time in 10 years as women's coach.

Wisconsin's Darling 4th, MSU's McLeod 6th, first team all-Big Ten

Three-time Division 3 state champion and Ovid-Elsie graduate Maverick Darling earned first team all-league honors by finishing fourth and helping the Wisconsin men grab their 111th straight Big Ten championship on Sunday at Penn State.

Junior Emily McLeod took sixth place and also made first team all-league for the fifth-place Michigan State women. The MSU men finished in eighth place.
